VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are an integral part of the care team at Horizon Hospice.  Our volunteers provide companionship, bring parts of the outside world  to otherwise isolated patients, and most importantly, give the family caregivers critical support in the tasks and responsibilities of tending for their loved one.

Volunteers undergo extensive training in the values and practices of hospice care before receiving their patient assignments.  Following certification, a volunteer typically spends 2-4 hours per week in either patient support, administration support or community outreach activities, depending on the volunteer’s preference.

Horizon Hospice volunteers come from all walks of life, from many age groups and with varying skills and experiences.  The things they all have in common is compassion for the sick and dying, and a desire to serve others.

Training occurs in two phases to better fit the schedules of new volunteers.  The first 18 hours of training are presented in a self-paced at-home curriculum.  The second phase of training is a six hour, one-day orientation class led by staff and other volunteers.

Additional training in special topics is also offered throughout the year, as are opportunities for social interaction and mutual support among the volunteers themselves.

For more information or to begin the process of becoming a volunteer with us, please contact the Volunteer Coordinators by phone or email us at VolunteersRspecial@yahoo.com.
